Tero Saarinen returns to the stage in Room 7, a new solo created for him by Carolyn Carlson. Having built a significant international career as a solo dancer, Saarinen dives into archetypes of the mind through the absurd and Carlson’s signature poetic expression. Since the 1970s, Carlson has been one of the leading figures of European modern dance, with a significant influence also on Finnish dance. Room 7 is a tribute to the long-standing and fruitful collaboration between these two artists. Read more about the piece here.
In Saarinen’s new duet Garden, two people construct their shared way of being in a world where the connection to nature has become blurred. In the piece, the garden appears as a metaphorical space in which the audience observes, with a sense of wonder, the human relationship to environment, form, and time. Movement emerges, transforms, and finds new shapes, and becomes the soil for something new. Read more about Garden here.
The evening’s premiere piece is a commission by Sonya Lindfors. Wild Is the Wind, which lends its name to the triple bill, is Lindfors’ major scale work featuring TSC dancers alongside dancers Akim Bakhtaoui, Marlon Moilanen, Axelle Munezero, and Maele Cheza Sabuni – all of whom have previously worked with Lindfors – as well as live trumpeter Devina Boughton. The piece draws on the Black performance tradition and explores the power of art and dance as catalysts for change. Read more about Wild Is the Wind here.
“Sonya Lindfors is one of the most compelling and distinctive contemporary choreographers in Northern Europe. We are delighted to produce and support her first large-scale group work for a major stage as part of TSC’s anniversary programme.” –Tero Saarinen
