René Aubry

René Aubry is a multi-instrumentalist and unclassifiable composer, whose works blend influences from dance and cinema with bold musical worlds. After encountering Carolyn Carlson in 1978, he became her regular musician and composed his first ballet music. This collaboration, which has continued since then, has led to many productions, among them Blue Lady (1983), Steppe (1990), and Signes (1997), the latter being awarded a Victoire de la Musique prize in 1998. Aubry recorded his first eponymous album in Venice, where he lived between 1981 and 1984, and has published over 25 records to date.

Choreographer Pina Bausch used his compositions to accompany three of her productions: Ten Chi (2004), Vollmond (2006), and Sweet Mambo (2008). His music has also been included in films such as Pina (2011) by Wim Wenders, L’Uomo in Più by Paolo Sorrentino, and Il Traditore (2019) by Marco Bellocchio, as well as in series. He wrote the music for Lorenzo Mattotti’s film La fameuse invasion des ours en Sicile, which was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019.

René Aubry was also entrusted in 2009 by Magic Light Pictures with the composition of the music for 15 animated film adaptations that became cult classics of Julia Donaldson's works, all broadcast on Christmas Day by the BBC. He toured European stages from 1999 to 2014, offering concerts where improvisation competed with the rigor of composition. Today, he continues to explore new sonic territories, for dance, theater, cinema, and ever bolder personal projects.
