Carolyn Carlson

Carolyn Carlson (b. 1943) is one of the leading figures of European contemporary dance. Born in the United States to a family of Finnish heritage, she has played a central role in the development of the art form in Europe since the 1970s through her work as choreographer, performer and director. She began her career dancing with Alwin Nikolais in New York and was invited to work for the Paris opera house in 1974, first as a leading choreographer and later as the head of the famous Group of Theatre Research for the Paris Opera House (GRTOP). In 1999 she established the Atelier de Paris – Carolyn Carlson. She has also directed the Dance Sector of La Biennale di Venezia during 1999–2002. In 2004–2014 she was the Artistic Director of Le Centre Chorégraphique National Roubaix-Nord pas de Calais. Carlson still performs actively.

Over the past four decades, her pioneering practice has helped bring experimental dance to major European stages. She has created more than one hundred works, many of which have become landmarks of contemporary dance. Carlson has received numerous honours, including the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2006 – the first choreographer to receive the award – and election to the Choreography Section of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in France in 2020. She has also received the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres and Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur honorary titles.

Carlson has also had a significant influence in Nordic countries, particularly in Finland. In 1991–1992 she acted as the director of Helsinki City Theatre Dance Company and created pieces for the Finnish National Ballet. During 1994–1995 she directed the Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm.

Carlson worked with Tero Saarinen for the first time in 1990 when he was dancing at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. She has since collaborated with Saarinen in many different ways. Among others Saarinen has performed three of her solo choreographies: Travelling, Man in a Room and Blue Lady. Carlson’s latest choreography for Saarinen, Room 7, premiered in 2024.
