Spring 2026

In 2026, Tero Saarinen Company will celebrate its 30th anniversary, and the spring’s training activities will pay tribute to the artists who have been a part of TSC's long history. As usual, the spring morning classes will offer Tero Technique and Pilates taught by TSC dancers. In addition, we will awaken the body for the day ahead through ballet, contemporary dance, and street dance as Anu Sistonen, Jenna Broas, Mikko Makkonen, Sonya Lindfors, and Maele Cheza Sabuni visit as morning class teachers. Jarmo Ahonen will also return to teach Pilates morning classes.

The spring program also includes three workshops. Yuval Pick, a founding member of TSC and a choreographer based in France, will arrive to teach a week-long workshop delving into his Practice movement method. During the Study for Life performances at the Dance House Helsinki we will host a Tero Technique repertoire workshop, where participants get the opportunity to explore the choreographic material of Study for Life with Tero Saarinen. Czech dancer, choreographer, and teacher Nataša Novotná will teach a week-long workshop programme on the Gaga technique and the repertoire of choreographer Jiří Kylián.

The training spring period starts on 12 January and will continue through 5 June. Please note that there are no classes on weeks 8–10 and on weeks 12–15. TSC morning classes

Rooted in Tero Saarinen’s unique movement philosophy, Tero Technique explores the body’s full expressive potential through dynamic exercises and qualities familiar in TSC’s creations. Fusing elements from ballet, contemporary dance and Asian traditions such as butoh, the technique is centered on awakening the senses in the soles of the feet and recognising the weight of one’s own body as a source of movement. By holistically awakening the bodymind, the technique cultivates heightened alertness and concentration, allowing each performer’s unique frequencies to emerge. Tero Technique is taught by TSC dancers David ScarantinoOskari Kymäläinen and Natasha Lommi.

Pilates morning classes awaken and warm up the body comprehensively for the upcoming day of movement. Pilates develops strength, mobility, and body awareness, focusing on core control and precise, breath-supported movement. For dancers, it offers tools for body alignment, movement efficiency, and the activation of deep supporting muscles. Pilates classes will be taught by TSC dancer and certified Pilates instructor Elina Häyrynen.  In January and February, Pilates will also be taught by visiting teacher Jarmo Ahonen. Read more about Jarmo’s morning classes below.

Anu Sistonen’s morning ballet classes are intended for professional dancers, advanced adults, and dance students. The class follows the typical structure of a classical ballet training class: it begins at the barre with exercises focused on warming up the body, breathing movement, and placement that reinforce technique. After a calm start, the tempo and dynamics of the movement change as the class progresses to center combinations and jumps. Special attention is given to musicality and dance expression. During Mikko Makkonen's classes you'll enjoy a four day build up with a focus towards floorwork, flow and variations of coordination. The classes develop from internal to spatial awareness, warming up the body through tasks, flocking and functional movement. The classes continue to a build up of coordinations and phrases offering accessible insights on e.g. floor acrobatics, level changes, glides, slides, sweeps, spirals and rolls.

Mikko's teaching draws from versatile dance and movement techniques aiming for clarity in articulation, functionality, flow and multidirectionality. In addition Mikko emphasizes a sense of anatomical structure and chain of movement together with awareness of the body-mind and a playful approach towards different practices. This combination of bodywork and playfulness builds up an overall sensation of movement in the context of the morning class. Read more about Mikko here.

In Jenna Broas’ classes, the aim is to create a space where movement can be explored from a deep and vast perspective – a space to surrender to the eclectic possibilities of the moving body. Movement is approached through both structured form and task-based improvisation. The practice is guided by a range of exercises and by working with associative imagery that resonates individually. It aims to tune into the enjoyment, sensitivity, and admiration of the inner landscape. In recent years, Jenna’s classes have revolved around repetition, stillness, groove, affects, multidirectionality, and readjustment. Read more about Jenna here.

Workshops

For several years, Yuval Pick has been developing a method, Practice, that nourishes his work and is now the daily training of his company’s dancers. Practice invites, through movement, each dancer to reconnect with their organic and intimate depth and to discover through the pleasure of dancing a freer relationship with space and with others. Through written exercises and guided improvisation with playful and organic images, it enriches dancer’s virtuosity. This method also enables a heightened awareness of presence in space, where each gesture, no matter how simple, becomes an expression of self.

These five fundamentals of Practice allow the physical and creative potential of dancers to be expanded: body rotation, weight transfer and rebound, movement from the center to the periphery, the “space-in between” and intention of the movement. During the workshop at TSC Studio participants will explore these basics that make up the method. Read more about Yuval here.

The workshop will contain a Tero Technique warm up led by Tero Saarinen, and end in an exploration of movement phrases from the piece. The exercises will help one attune and become more sensitive to the sounds and forms that emerge in the room and give new tools to awaken a more holistic sense of moving.

Participants of the workshop have the opportunity to see the explored repertory on stage with a special workshop + performance ticket deal. The workshop thus serves as an invitation to a deeper sensory experience of the performance. Study for Life Repertoire Workshop:
Saturday 7 March at 10:00–13:00
Workshop price: 35 €

Nataša’s workshop week offers insight into two seemingly different dance worlds, physically experiencing Gaga, the movement language by Ohad Naharin, and the choreographic work by Jiří Kylián.

The morning classes explore Gaga, ending with one task based on Jiří Kylián’s repertoire. Training for the day with Gaga offers both joy and challenge to connect deeply with the body and its senses. In the class participants use the tools of imagination while challenging physical limits. Kylián’s repertoire plays with the fine-tuned instrument of an agile dancer, physically ready to communicate on a large scale of movement forms. In the class Nataša wishes to create a friendly environment - respecting the past, living the present, creating the future, and something new!

The Saturday workshop starts with a short warm-up and dives into the choreography by Jiří Kylián. The workshop will consist of a 30 minutes warm up followed by 2,5 hours of a daily task applied to Kylián repertoire. Read more about Nataša here.

About Gaga:

Gaga is the movement language developed by Ohad Naharin throughout many years,
parallel to his work as a choreographer and as the former artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company. Gaga originated from Naharin’s need to communicate with his dancers and his curiosity in the ongoing research of movement.

Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening the body and adding flexibility, stamina, agility, and skills including coordination and efficiency, while stimulating the senses and the imagination. Gaga classes are predicated on a deep activation of the body and physical sensations while increasing awareness. Though instructions are imbued with rich imagery, the research of Gaga is fundamentally physical, insisting on a specific process of embodiment.

About Jiří Kylián:
World-renowned choreographer Jiří Kylián has created nearly 100 works of which many are performed all over the world. Kylián served as the artistic director of Nederlands Dans Theater for nearly a quarter century and founded the second company of the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT2), followed by the third (NDT3) ten years later. During his long tenure with NDT, he pushed choreographic boundaries and created upwards of 75 new works for the company, including Sinfonietta, Petite Mort, and BELLA FIGURA. In addition to NDT, he has also created works for Stuttgart Ballet, the Paris Opéra Ballet, Bayerisches Staatsoper Münich and the Tokyo Ballet.
