TSC morning classes

Rooted in Tero Saarinen’s unique movement philosophy, Tero Technique explores the body’s full expressive potential through dynamic exercises and qualities familiar in TSC’s creations. Fusing elements from ballet, contemporary dance and Asian traditions such as butoh, the technique is centered on awakening the senses in the soles of the feet and recognising the weight of one’s own body as a source of movement. By holistically awakening the bodymind, the technique cultivates heightened alertness and concentration, allowing each performer’s unique frequencies to emerge. Tero Technique is taught by David ScarantinoTero Saarinen and and TSC dancers Oskari Kymäläinen and Natasha Lommi.

Pilates morning classes awaken and warm up the body comprehensively for the upcoming day of movement. Pilates develops strength, mobility, and body awareness, focusing on core control and precise, breath-supported movement. For dancers, it offers tools for body alignment, movement efficiency, and the activation of deep supporting muscles. Pilates classes will be taught by TSC dancer and certified Pilates instructor Elina Häyrynen.  In September, Pilates will also be taught by Jarmo Ahonen. Read more about Jarmo’s morning classes below.

On Mia Jaatinen's morning classes we focus on arcs of movement, chaining the movement and the observation of both the internal and external spatiality of the body in solo and contact work. We will approach contact work through various practices and tasks related to contact improvisation and partnering. Mia’s classes always start with a listening, soft and dialogic approach to contact work, taking into account the starting points and limits of each individual.

Mia's classes focus on tuning and harnessing the reactive, perceptive, social, feeling, following and leading body-mind. The classes dive into a movement language of floating, curving, chaining, falling, multi-directional, articulating and rotating movement, which is also integrated into contact dancing. Dance is approached through movement material and task-based improvisation and play. In the classes you’ll do floorwork and dance on the feet, alone and together, each from their own starting points. In Olli Lautiola’s morning classes the day starts with game like exercises to awaken the senses and to get heat in the body. Depending on the time of the day, the class takes time to open and tune into the body. The class will continue with various exercises through the space, evolving into short prepared phrases in the end. The phrase material deconstructs and borrows mechanisms from different movement practices such as acrobatics and utilizes those mechanics to create new movement material, that is multi-directional and dynamic. In Olli’s class the movement flows nicely but challenges the mover with a relaxed grip. Read more about Olli here.

Workshops

Internationally sought after teacher and choreographer, Julia Ehrstrand, teaches a workshop programme in TSC Studio in September-October. The programme consists of five morning classes from Mon 29 September to Fri 3rd October with a weekend workshop, held on Saturday 4th October. The week with Julia offers an opportunity to deep dive into her practice and movement!

In Julia’s dance classes 29.9.–3.10 the focus is on utilisizing spinal articulations and release techniques, and finding an organic way of moving. The aim is to challenge the dancer's technique and to find a maximum range of movement. The class starts with a set technical warm up with elements of floor work, stretch and strength. The warm up flows through for 45-50 minutes, followed by working on a phrase for the rest of the class. The aim in the classes is for the dancers to find their own interpretation and flow of the movement – to make it feel natural in the body.

During the workshop on 4th of October dancers have the opportunity to learn repertoire phrases from Julia’s vocabulary and then dive into some of her choreography methods, while using and deconstructing the material. Read more about Julia Ehrstrand here.

The Masterclass of Tero Technique dives deep into Tero Saarinen’s holistic movement philosophy. The teaching of the workshop concentrates on the central patterns of movement that make up the technique. The participants will gain new tools for awakening the bodymind in order to create a more holistic sense of moving within the individual. The workshop begins with an hour long warm-up and technique class, followed by repertory exercises, inclucing material from TSC’s recent creations.

The class is meant for dance professionals and advanced-level students, who wish to gain insight into the technique in the guidance of Tero Saarinen himself. The workshop is taught by Tero Saarinen and David Scarantino.
