Thank you for sharing our opening season with us! More than 4000 people attended HZ | HUNT at Tanssin talo and the Erkko Hall was sold out for the very first time in history, as we presented a new interpretation of Tero Saarinen’s beloved Rite of Spring solo HUNT (2002) and Johanna Nuutinen’s choreography Hz (2022) on 31 March – 9 April.

“Both works are a commentary on the numbing torrent of stimuli that causes us to lose ourselves. It feels as if the theme is more relevant now than ever before.”
Tero Saarinen, Artistic Director

Johanna Nuutinen’s Hz (Hertz) is a deep dive into soundwaves, in which underwater sound pollution acts as a metaphor for the sensory stimuli of the modern world. Interpreted by five brilliant dancers the work takes its audience to a zone where hearing becomes experiencing. Nuutinen’s Hz is the first piece commissioned for TSC by another choreographer.

Tero Saarinen’s HUNT, influenced by the duality of life and the transience of corporeality, was commissioned by the Venice Biennale in 2002. The work, praised by audiences and critics alike, was labelled one of the most significant contemporary reinterpretations of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Saarinen toured with the work for over 10 years until the end of 2013, in a total of 83 cities and 32 countries. Now, Saarinen is passing on his technically and expressionally demanding solo to two new dancers: Auri Ahola (31.3.–5.4.), known as an extremely charismatic interpreter and Atte Kilpinen (6.4–9.4.), who has a top-flight career in ballet internationally.

“Impressive – Extraordinary – Powerful“

“HUNT is remarkable on a number of levels, evoking the ballet of the past, and the 20th century artistic and scientific movements that shook the world. It is truly a tour de force.“

- TORONTO STAR (Canada), 2006 | HUNT

“Auri Ahola’s stunning virtuosity and intensity were breathtaking.”

“Atte Kilpinen was absolutely brilliant. His extremely sensitive and movementally expressive interpretation was stunning.”

“Nuutinen is a master of creating in-depth well-planned, strongly visual works of art. She has found something very own and is already a name that is also in demand internationally.”

“Rigorous work in the intersections of art, science and social emotions has resulted in a timeless work, which has, through polished details and precision, a strength that downright sprains the mind.”
