In October 2024, TSC brings the creation The Seven Sins, a production by German Gauthier Dance//Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart, to Dance House Helsinki. The Seven Sins includes 7 choreographies by 7 choreographers who of worldwide fame who have all transposed one mortal sin into a dance piece. The evening features choreographies by Aszure Barton, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Sharon Eyal, Marco Goecke, Marcos Morau, Hofesh Shechter and Sasha Waltz.

Carolyn Carlson is creating a new solo piece for Tero Saarinen. Titled Room 7 , the solo will premiere at the Civitanova Danza festival in Italy on July 4th. The piece will be presented as part of an evening featuring two works by Tero Saarinen Company, opening with Saarinen's own classic piece, Westward Ho!

The 2024 residencies will seek a connection to death through dance and theatre, transform movement into music through motion capture technology, and explore grief and its embodied experience. The TSC residencies will feature choreographer Jenni Kivelä and with the group Kiltit Ihmiset, composer and sound designer Charo Calvo with her working group, and dance, video, and spatial art duo Broas & Nyberg.

You can experience Tero Saarinen and Kimmo Pohjonen's acclaimed duet, Breath, in Dance House Helsinki in June! In this creation, which premiered in Canada in 2018, sound and movement merge as the two globally acclaimed take measure of each other on stage, composing a power web of sound and movement.  The duet is further enhanced by Mikki Kunttu’s stage and lighting design, fashion designer Teemu Muurimäki’s costumes and Tuomas Norvio’s imaginative sound design.

The call for TSC Residencies 2024 is open! In this call, we search for artists for both a Studio Residency (15–28 January) and the Sound Residency (10–30 June), made possible by Genelec. The application process is open to all creators – from individual artists and working groups to more established groups or collectives – working in the performing arts field, with an interest in developing bodily awareness and physical expression. The call is open to both young creators as well as more established artists. TSC Studio is a 200m2 dance studio, located at the Cable Factory in Helsinki, Finland. In March, Tero Saarinen Company and TTT Theatre's new co-production Macbeth (2024) premieres at Dance House Helsinki. In the seamless amalgamation of dance, drama and juggling, co-directed with TTT Theatre’s Artistic Director Otso Kautto, everyone on stage is both subject and object to the narrative. Michael Baran’s austere adaptation of the original play, Mikki Kunttu’s lighting design, Samu-Jussi Koski’s costumes and Marko Nyberg’s music and sound design revise the tragedy to the present. Tero Saarinen's creations Transit and Third Practice are touring in autumn 2023. Transit will be performed at Turku City Theatre on 26 Sep and at Dance House Helsinki in the Erkko Hall on 4–6 Oct. Tero Saarinen Company and Skånes Dansteater's coproduction returned to TSC's repertoire by popular demand in 2023, after having both its world premiere and Finnish premiere under strict Covid restrictions during 2020–2021. Tero Saarinen Company and Helsinki Baroque Orchestra's cocreation Third Practice will be presented in October at Tampere Hall (18 Oct) and in France at the Carré Sainte-Maxime (28 Oct).

In spring 2023 Anette Toiviainen and Iiris Puustinen's residencies started a new collaboration between TSC and Amos Rex. The goal of the collaboration is to support new generations in the performing arts field. Toiviainen's solo Duet got its start as a reflection on loneliness and longing for another person’s touch. Puustinen's creation 3,2,1 (The Walk) aims to bring fashion world aesthetics into the art exhibition. Both choreographies were performed in Amos Rex Generation 2023 Performance programme. | In summer's Sound Residency, musician-composers Maija Kauhanen and Hugh Sheehan will conduct experiments in both the audience’s, and performers’ position, movement and gesture. Utilising TSC Studio’s immersive audio system, they will explore the characteristics of spatial audio as thematic and motivic origin. Kauhanen and Sheehan form an artistic duo that uses the Finnish traditional instrument kantele together with electronics, home-made instruments, and human-computer interfaces. Their work explores the internal characteristics of sound, and experimental improvisation and performance processes.

Tero Saarinen's creations Third Practice and Transit are being broadcasted globally in May and June 2023. Third Practice is returning on Mezzo TV's programme during 23 May – 16 June. The multi-camera recording of TSC's and Helsinki Baroque Orchestra's creation was shot at the Finnish National Opera in March 2021 by film director Thomas Freundlich. On Sunday 21 May, Japan's public media organization NHK will broadcast Transit, shot at Merikaapelihalli in Helsinki during the creation's Finnish premiere season.

TSC's new coproduction has won the international FEDORA - Van Cleef & Arpels Dance Prize 2022. The Spanish Kor'sia Collective's creation Mont Ventoux revisits the work of the 14th century humanist Francesco Petrarca. Inspired by Petrarch's Ascent of Mont Ventoux (1336), the collective seeks answers from the past for the conflicts being proposed to us by a 21st-century paradigm shift. The creation will have its Nordic premiere during 2025 at TSC's Dance House Helsinki.

Tero Saarinen‘s latest large-scale choreography Transit (2020) is a co-production with Skånes Dansteater. The first performance in Malmö Opera as well as the Finnish premiere at Helsinki Festival took place under strict Covid restrictions. In 2023 the creation returns in TSC’s programme by popular demand with shows at Dance House Helsinki on 4–6 October accompanied by visiting performances at Tampere Hall in April and Turku City Theatre in September. In Tampere, Transit is performed with live music: the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra will be directed by Hannu Lintu. Transit will also return on stage in Malmö by SDT in February.

Applications for the 2023 summer Sound Residency are now open. TSC’s Sound Residencies offer artists a chance to use TSC Studio, located at the Cable Factory in Helsinki, and the dance studio's unique multi-channel audio system for lab-like work. The residencies are aimed at all creators and working groups in perfoming arts, both young and more established, with interest and skills to use Genelec’s immersive audio technology for examining the relationship between sound and movement. The deadline for applications is on 17 Feb at 16:00 (UTC +2).

Dutch artist duo and siblings Imre and Marne van Opstal's new creation Heart Drive, co-commissioned by Ballet BC and Tero Saarinen Company, had its world premiere in Vancouver on 3 November. An exploration of love, connection and pleasure, the international co-production will be restaged for eight TSC dancers in 2023. The European premiere of Heart Drive will take place at Dance House Helsinki in June as a part of Tero Saarinen Company’s new double bill. Transit (2020), a co-production of TSC and Skånes Dansteater, returns on stage in Malmö, Sweden! The re-premiere of Tero Saarinen’s latest large-scale creation will kick off Skins Dansteater's spring season with a total of 14 performances during February 2023. Tero Saarinen Company’s 25th-anniversary premiered at Malmö Opera on 3 October 2020 with a live orchestra. The Finnish premiere was presented at Helsinki Festival under strict Covid restrictions in 2021. In Transit, efforts have been made to use sustainable, resource-efficient approaches in the production: the costumes and set partly relying on recycled materials are shared between the groups and, as with other TSC works, Transit aims to have a long lifecycle. Tampereen Työväen Teatteri's rock musical rendition of Hamlet is set to have its TV premiere on Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle Teema). After its premiere on 3 December, the multi-camera recording will also be available online via Yle Areena until 2 December, 2023. Directed by Otso Kautto and starring Saska Pulkkinen, Hamlet has received rave reviews following its 2020 premiere, including several 5/5 stars by key Finnish newspapers. TSC's Tero Saarinen and Satu Halttunen's role was to create the actors' movement identity, based on Saarinen's TERO Technique. The recording of Hamlet is directed by film maker Thomas Freundlich, also known from the creative team of Saarinen's choreography Third Practice.

In September TSC presented three sold-out shows of Tero Saarinen's VORTEX (2014) at Dance House Helsinki. The visiting performance by the National Dance Company of Korea received rave reviews from critics, and standing ovations from a total of 2,100 audience members. The call for a Residency at TSC Studio in January 2023 is now open! TSC residencies are open to all artists working with and in between different performing art forms and have an interest in physical expression. Be bold and apply by 2 Dec! | On Thursday 1 Dec at 17:00, the past summer’s TSC Sound Residency artists choreographer Suvi Kemppainen, composer Walter Sallinen and dramaturg Klaus Maunuksela’s working group, present a demo of their work-in-progress creation in TSC Studio (The Cable Factory, 3rd floor). The length of the demo is 20 minutes, and it will be followed by a discussion with the artists. The tri-weekly TERO Technique Morning Classes for Professionals will be held at TSC Studio in Helsinki on 5 – 23 September and 7 November – 2 December each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The classes focus on awakening the body and the senses through TERO Technique exercises. Choreographer Tero Saarinen's distinctive movement language is further explored through repertoire exercises featuring material from Saarinen’s creations. The classes continue in Stockholm on 5 – 8 December (Read more at danscentrumstockholm.se). All classes are taught by TSC Dancer and Training Activities Coordinator David Scarantino whose energy and enthusiasm is contagious – welcome!

Tero Saarinen Company is performing at the opening festivities of Estonia’s newest cultural hub Viimsi Artium. TSC’s latest double bill Hz | HUNT will be presented on two separate nights: Saarinen’s HUNT on 30 Aug, and Nuutinen’s Hz on 1 Sept. On Tuesday, HUNT (2002) will be performed by Auri Ahola. The solo is followed by a screening of Thomas Freundlich’s documentary Rooted with Wings (Lumikinos Production, 2018), a visual dance film that explores the work of Tero Saarinen and the company. Hz (2022), commissioned from choreographer Johanna Nuutinen will be performed on Thursday by Elina Häyrynen, Sofia Ruija, Minttu Pietilä, Mikko Lampinen and Riccardo Zandonà. The show is followed by a concert from Estonian musician Maarja Nuut.

On Friday 26 August, during 15:00–20:00 at TSC Studio (Cable Factory, Helsinki), TSC holds a demo created by Sound Designer and TSC’s permanent artist in residence, Tuomas Norvio.  The aim of the demo has been to study and create different spatial sounds or landscapes, in various spaces within TSC’s premises, using Genelec’s multi-channel audio system and Flexound HUMU Augmented Audio Cushions. The “heart” of the demo is the steel tongue drum.

The National Dance Company of Korea returns Tero Saarinen’s choreography VORTEX to its repertoire. NDCK will perform the work at the National Theater of Korea's Haeoreum Grand Theater on 24–26 June in Seoul and at Dance House Helsinki on 22–24 September. The creation, commissioned by NDCK in 2014, will now be seen in Finland for the first time. The primal 'vortex' of the interface between past and present, as well as East and West, is interpreted by 23 performers. The live music, composed for VORTEX by Young-gyu Jang, is performed by an ensemble known for its innovative interpretations of the Korean musical heritage. The lighting and set design is by Mikki Kunttu and costumes are by Erika Turunen. Tero Saarinen was the first foreign contemporary choreographer to work with the renowned troupe, dedicated to upholding and promoting Korean dance traditions. NDCK has achieved huge success with both audiences and critics alike with the creation. In addition to several recurring seasons in Seoul, the group has also toured with VORTEX in Asia and Europe. As the Helsinki premiere season of Third Practice is canceled due to the declined pandemic situation TSC produces a praised multi-camera recording of the work at the Finnish National Opera, together with Thomas Freundlich and Lumikinos Production. Through the year the recording is available globally to over 60 million households. Despite the continuing uncertainty and strict restrictions placed on culture, the sold out Finnish premiere season of Transit took place with a limited audience capacity at the Helsinki Festival on 19 August, and Saarinen’s duet Splice is seen at the Full Moon Dance Festival in Pyhäjärvi and at Dance Health Finland’s 20th anniversary gala in Helsinki. In Tampere, Loopit returned to Dance Theatre MD’s repertoire as an updated coproduction and the rock-musical rendition of Hamlet continued in Tampereen Työväen Teatteri’s repertoire through the fall. The residency programme continued successfully, and Sanni Giordani, Raekallio Corp and Hägglund Viipuri Collective were chosen for the residencies throug TSC’s first open calls. Tero Saarinen and Kimmo Pohjonen's duet Breath returns to TSC's repertoire in 2022! The show was first scheduled for 24 March 2021, but it had to be postponed due to latest Covid-19 restrictions. The piece will now be presented 16 March 2022 at Oulu Theatre in collaboration with JoJo - Oulu Dance Centre. In Breath, live music, dance and visuals intertwine to create wild forms and mythical images – infused by Beckett-inspired existentialism and absurd humour. The creation's lighting design is by Mikki Kunttu, sound design by Tuomas Norvio and costumes by fashion designer Teemu Muurimäki. Choreographer’s Assistant is Henrikki Heikkilä.

TSC began a new collaboration with Kiasma Theatre’s annual street art and culture festival URB, and Nordic Hiphop to the Stage, an international project funded by Nordisk kulturfund and Nordisk kulturkontakt, that aims to build an institutionally backed network for collaborations in the sphere of street culture and performance arts. In March TSC provided an artistic residency at TSC Studio for dancers Hamis Zzy and Siiri Korkeamäki. During their two-week residency, Hamis and Siiri created movement material for their new solos that are part of URB's EU funded Be Part project. Their works are to be seen on 7–9 June at URB's programme at Stoa Helsinki, as a part of a full evening performance, created by the French Art Move Concept and Nordic Hiphop to the Stage.

Tero Saarinen Company is part of a sustainability initiative led by Rambert (UK). The project aims to create Europe’s first equitable and inclusive network supporting the dance sector to make meaningful change to environmental policy and practice by sharing experience from sustainable co-productions and digital innovations. The European Sustainability Dance Network has been shortlisted for a FedoraNext Stage Grant. Other initial collaborators include Scottish Ballet (UK) and Ultima Vez (Belgium).

Our collaboration with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen continues with a new creation in celebration of FNOB's centenary year! Saarinen's choreography, Wedge, produced in collaboration with TSC will premiere on the Main Stage of The Finnish National Ballet in Helsinki, in May 2022. Wedge will end a triple bill titled 'Made in Finland', showcasing three internationally acclaimed Finnish choreographers: Kenneth Kvarnström, Johanna Nuutinen and Tero Saarinen. Saarinen's choreography to the Cello Concerto by Esa-Pekka Salonen will be interpreted by dancers from the Finnish National Ballet and TSC, performing together with the Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera. Dance, sound and light will be wedged together in the interface between chaos and order, defenselessness and safety, and the experience of the transience of existence. The costume design is by TSC’s trusted designer, Erika Turunen, lighting and set design by Joonas Tikkanen and sound design by Timo Kurkikangas. TSC's David Scarantino and Satu Halttunen work as choreographer's assistants in the creation. 

Two groups were chosen for a Sound Residency in TSC Studio for Summer 2022. During 27 June – 10 July choreographer Suvi Kemppainen, composer Walter Sallinen and dramaturg Klaus Maunuksela will work towards their new stage work From a great height: a choreographic sonic ceremony that examines subsidence, transgression and love for grief. During 11–31 July the multi-disciplinary Yumi Collective, consisting of Sebastian Kurten, Simeoni Juoperi, Antti Uimonen and Hamis Zzy, will be working on their first staged work at TSC Studio. Inspired by the 'Gömböc' shape, their creation will examine balance and its reciprocative nature. The Sound Residency programme, made possible by Genelec, is reserved for creators focused on the relationship between sound and movement.

Tero Saarinen Company’s Opening Season in Tanssin talo, 31.3.–9.4.2022 consists of a new interpretation of Saarinen’s beloved solo HUNT (2002) and the premiere of Johanna Nuutinen’s choreography Hz (2022). Interpreted by five dancers, Hz (Hertz) is a deep dive into soundwaves, in which underwater sound pollution acts as a metaphor for the sensory stimuli of the modern world. Nuutinen's Hz is the first piece commissioned for TSC by another choreographer. Saarinen's HUNT was commissioned by the Venice Biennale in 2002, after which Saarinen toured with the work in a total of 32 countries until 2013. Praised by audiences and critics alike, HUNT was labelled one of the most significant contemporary reinterpretations of Stravinsky’s 'The Rite of Spring'. Now, Saarinen is passing on his demanding solo to two new dancers: Auri Ahola and Atte Kilpinen.

All applicants will be individually notified about the selection by mid April. // Tero Saarinen Company seeks professional dancers for a new group work by Dutch choreographers Imre and Marne van Opstal. The work is set to premiere in TSC’s repertoire in June 2023 at Dance House Helsinki, Finland. The commissioned creation will be part of a double bill that continues TSC's new concept of combining contemporary dance classics with new creations by up-and-coming choreographers. Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal are renowned performing artists and siblings, who form a creative duo. Their work, known to be multi-layered and surrealistic with a strong and outspoken dance language, often speaks to the human condition. The one-day auditions are held on 14 and 15 May in TSC Studio at the Cable Factory. The applicants should have a professional degree in dance and be available to work in Helsinki during 15 May – 17 June, 2023. After the audition on 14–15 May we are offering a free TERO Technique workshop by David Scarantino. Applicants can choose if they wish to participate in both the audition and the workshop, or apply / sign up for only one or the other. Tanssin talo (Dance House Helsinki), the new home for dance in Helsinki, opens on 2 February 2022! An excerpt of Saarinen's Transit will be showcased at the opening gala along with other Finnish dance groups. The Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE will broadcast the opening gala, organized without audience at the Erkko Hall, on 2.2.2022 at 8 pm (GMT +2). Tero Saarinen Company is one of the official house partners of Dance House Helsinki, and will present up to three home seasons at the 700-seat Erkko Hall each year. In addition to Tero Saarinen's creations, TSC will present works from visiting choreographers and companies. The newly built state of the art venue is located at the city's premiere cultural hub, the Cable Factory, right next to our very own TSC Studio and office.

Tero Saarinen's VORTEX will return to the programme of the National Theater of Korea in 2022! The creation will be performed by a new cast of the National Dance Company of Korea at Haeoreum Grand Theater, in Seoul on 24–26 June 2022. VORTEX (Haeori) was commissioned by the National Dance Company of Korea in 2014. Tero Saarinen was the first foreign contemporary choreographer to work with the renowned troupe, dedicated to upholding and promoting Korean dance traditions. In the creation, Saarinen combines 25 dancers, interpreting his signature choreographic style, with live music by Be-being, an ensemble known for its innovative interpretations of the Korean musical heritage.

Two groups were chosen for a residency in TSC Studio for Spring 2022. In January artist and choreographer Tiia Kasurinen and team will be working on a new staged work SURFACE; a humoristic, yet harrowing perspective on existing under the gaze. In April contemporary circus artist and founder of Nuua Company, Olli Vuorinen, will be developing an upcoming solo piece Blueberry Burdock, directed by Thomas Monckton. The next Open Call for TSC Sound Residencies, made possible by Genelec, starts by January. The Sound Residency, set to take place in Summer 2022, is reserved for creators focused on the relationship between sound and movement.

Tero Saarinen Company's next premiere, Hz (2022) is a new group piece by choreographer Johanna Nuutinen. In Hz, underwater sound pollution acts as a metaphor for the sensory stimuli of the modern world. The audience will deep dive into sound waves – to a zone where hearing becomes experiencing. The creative team consists of many interesting names, e.g. fashion artist and costume designer Mert Otsamo! Set to premiere at Tanssin talo's Erkko Hall in March 2022, Hz is the first piece commissioned for TSC by another choreographer. It is part of a double bill featuring a loved TSC classic. Ticket sales start in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned!

The Chekhov International Theatre Festival will present an evening titled Monteverdi Revisited in Moscow on 30 Nov – 1 Dec. The show will combine the screening of the film version of Tero Saarinen’s creation Third Practice with a live concert by Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and special guest, world-renowned contra tenor Dmitry Sinkovsky. The shows at the Mayakovsky Theatre are the second time a Tero Saarinen Company programme is featured at the esteemed Festival, arranged for the 15th time this year. In addition to Third Practice, the programme includes performances from various interesting European names such as Mourad Merzouki and La Fura dels Baus, as well as groups from Argentina and South Korea.

Tero Saarinen’s choreography Splice will be seen at a gala celebrating the 20th anniversary of Dance Health Finland. The Dance for Life Gala is held on Sunday 14 November at the Alexander Theatre in Helsinki. Splice is an evolution of a duet, originally seen in Third Practice (2019), co-produced by TSC and Helsinki Baroque Orchestra. The duet was originally performed at the Full Moon Dance Festival in July 2021. In November, the duet will be interpreted by dancers Natasha Lommi and Pekka Louhio. Tickets for the gala are sold by lippu.fi and the Alexander Theatre.

On 9–10 October Hägglund Viipuri Collective will present a feminist and mainly auto-fictional performance, titled agirlisagirlisagirlisasound, at TSC Studio. The work, examining girl and womanhood through sound and movement, is the result of Hägglund Viipuri Collective’s Sound Residency at TSC studio in July 2021. Yet another TSC creation is being featured on Mezzo TV. The global culture channel  will show Third Practice from 7 September to 6 November. Mezzo broadcasts its content, focused on classical music and dance, in 80 countries to 60 million subscribing households. TSC creations Morphed and Borrowed Light have also been seen on the channel. In Third Practice (2019), choreographer Tero Saarinen brings new dimensions to the music of opera pioneer Claudio Monteverdi. The composer's stunningly beautiful, revolutionary madrigals are interpreted by tenor Topi Lehtipuu, virtual soprano Núria Rial, Tero Saarinen Company dancers and Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, directed by Aapo Häkkinen. The multi-camera recording was shot at the Finnish National Opera in March 2021 by a team led by director Thomas Freundlich of Lumikinos Production.

Tero Saarinen's new large scale creation Transit examines our relationship with nature. The creation is set to music by contemporary composer Sebastian Fagerlund, combined with the spatial sound design of Tuomas Norvio. The design centers on a dialog between an animated film installation by visual artist duo IC-98, lighting design by Minna Tiikkainen and costume design by Teemu Muurimäki. In accordance with the creation's environmental themes, sustainable, resource-efficient solutions encompass the entire production, as costumes and stage design, based in part on recycled materials, are shared between TSC and SDT for future performances. At Helsinki Festival, the creation is interpreted by 13 dancers: TSC freelancers are joined by visitors from Dance Theatre Minimi and The Finnish National Ballet Youth Company. Tero Saarinen's choreography Splice will premiere at the Full Moon Dance Festival gala on 24 July. The new duet explores the evolution of a bond between two people, its constant hinging an unhinging. The music and sound design also create a unique weave: the improvisation of Helsinki Baroque Orchestra musicians Eero Palviainen and Mikko Perkola is spliced together with sounds of nature. The creation is a continuation of a duet featured in Saarinen's full evening creation Third Practice (2019).  At the premiere it is interpreted by dancers Natasha Lommi and Pekka Louhio, with costumes by Erika Turunen.

We are seeking 2-3 production workers to help us prepare for the premiere season during the performance week on 16–21 August 2021. You will be part of a work group of more than 30 people, assisting in the production of the Finnish premiere of a new large-scale creation. You will mainly work at the Cable Factory in Helsinki. The work is ideal, for example, for a student, recent graduate, or someone otherwise interested in working in the cultural sector. The job is paid by the hour, 14 €/h. We hope to receive applications from people of various age groups and backgrounds, and from linguistic, cultural or other minorities. The pandemic year 2020 was exceptionally challenging for the performing arts. The opening of Tero Saarinen Company's new premises and the TSC Studio took place only a week before the effects of the Covid-19 started showing in Finland. Our organization has never before faced such difficulties, as when public events were restricted and all international activities had to be shut down. Like everyone in our field, we've had to live with constant uncertainty and fear for the survival of our organization as well as all freelancers, who are truly essential to both TSC and our whole industry. However, thanks to financial support from the Finnish government, our agile network organization and strong partnerships, TSC has been able to manage through the crisis so far. During the fall season we were even able to present three new works: Transit, produced together with Skånes Dansteater, and two duets, Voice and Rebond, produced in collaboration with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, TSC's Tero Saarinen and Satu Halttunen created the movement identity for a new rock musical rendition of Hamlet, produced by Tampereen Työväen Teatteri. We also launched our residency programme at TSC Studio. And, our works and online classes reached tens of thousands of viewers and participants around the globe, as the world became more digital than ever. Throughout our 25 years of existence, Tero Saarinen Company’s art and actions have been based on fundamental humanist values, equality and respect for all. Despite this, we have acknowledged a need to further understand and dismantle many forms of systemic oppression within our field – and organization. Therefore we at TSC have started actively educating ourselves, in order to go towards more inclusive and sustainable future.

Due to new restrictions in the Helsinki area, the Almi Hall season of Third Practice was cancelled. All ticket holders will be contacted via email as soon as possible. Hägglund Viipuri Kollektiivi was chosen for the first Sound Residency in June-July. Iida Hägglund and Maija Viipuri will focus on the bodily experiences of spatial sound design and moving sounds, while working towards a staged performance dealing with the experiences of girl and womanhood. TSC Sound Residencies and TSC Studio’s immersive audio system are made possible by Genelec. 62 working groups applied for TSC Residencies during the first two open calls in winter 2020–2021. A total of  three groups were chosen, each getting two free weeks at TSC Studio in Helsinki in 2021.

Today, February 18, marks 25 years since Tero Saarinen Company’s first performance, the premiere of Westward Ho! at Dansens Hus in Stockholm. A quarter of a century of dance has taken us to 40 countries and every continent, and made friends for our works from near and far. A total of 44 working groups applied for TSC Residencies in the first open call. Two groups were chosen, each getting two free weeks at TSC Studio in Helsinki. Mostly Mass, a working group assembled by Dance Artist Sanni Giordani was selected for the March-April period. The group’s focus will be in contact work and developing movement ideas for a new piece, co-produced by Kinetic Orchestra. Raekallio Corp., a working group led by Choreographer Valtteri Raekallio, was selected for the May-June period. Their aim is to finalize a new creation, Three Days. The third available residency period at TSC Studio is reserved for creators focused on the relationship between sound and movement. The open call for the TSC Sound Residency programme, made possible by Genelec, is still open until 2 Feb.

Loopit (2017) by Tero Saarinen returns to the repertoire of Tampere-based Dance Theatre MD this season. The intimate and absurdly humorous choreography is flavoured by the music of The Tiger Lillies and texts from William Shakeaspeare‘s plays. Due to ongoing restrictions, the creation's re-premiere will take place online, via the Keikalla.fi platform on 23 and 29 January. Loopit was originally commissioned from Saarinen for MD's 20th anniversary and produced in collaboration with Tero Saarinen Company. The 2021 shows feature TSC Dancer Oskari Kymäläinen among the cast. Live performances, taking place at MD's Hällä Stage in Tampere, have been postponed from March to 17–18 September 2021.

TERO Technique Online Morning Classes for Professionals are back by popular demand in January – March 2021! The digital classes are taught live via zoom from TSC Studio in Helsinki by David Scarantino. The awareness of limited space in your own home brings a unique opportunity to look closer at the elements within TERO Technique that lead to 360-degree movement: Focus, Fingertips and Rooting. The first online classes for professionals, held in November–December 2020, had participants from 8 countries on different continents.

TSC Studio Sound Residencies provide an opportunity to work on the relationship between sound and movement in a laboratory-like environment.  The working period can, for instance, be aimed at multidisciplinary experimentation, creation of a new work, or developing one’s professional audio expertise. The Sound Residencies are made possible by Genelec, the provider of TSC Studio’s audio equipment. With the programme, TSC and Genelec aim to support sound-art innovation and the development of audio-expertise. Artists chosen to take part in the Sound Residencies are chosen through an international application process. The open call covers weeks 26–27. Despite Covid-19, Tampereen Työväen Teatteri's rock musical rendition of Hamlet has been a significant audience success, and will continue in the theatre's repertoire! The performances from Spring season have been postponed till Autumn: 17 September – 20 November 2021. Hamlet received rave reviews following its premiere, including several 5/5 stars by key Finnish newspapers. Directed by Otso Kautto and starring Saska Pulkkinen, TSC's Tero Saarinen and Satu Halttunen's role in the creation was to work with the actors' movement identity, based on TERO technique.

TSC's works are again being featured on Mezzo TV. The global culture channel will show recordings of Morphed and Borrowed Light from 1 to 25 December, 2020. Both works, filmed at Chaillot in Paris and directed by Louise Narboni, were first broadcast on the channel in 2018 and last seen there this March. Mezzo broadcasts its content, focused on classical music and dance, in 60 countries to 28 million subscribers.

Tero Saarinen’s Kullervo, the Kalevala-themed co-production with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, has received a remarkable online audience this year. The piece has been viewed by a total of 32,000 people – 18,000 in Finland and 14,000 abroad – from April to October via Yle Areena and Stage24. Kullervo was also available on Arte and the #HomeWithEU campaign in the US. The audience numbers for the latter two are yet to be confirmed, so the amount of online viewers for 2020 will most likely still grow significantly.

We are opening up TSC Studio to artistic residencies! The aim of TSC Residencies is to support the working conditions of freelance artists, the development of the Finnish dance field and to serve as a platform for multi-disciplinary experiments. TSC residencies are open to all artists who work with and in between different performing art forms and have an interest in physical expression. The open call covers two working periods for spring 2021: 22 Mar – 4 Apr and 31 May – 13 June. Rooted with Wings (Lumikinos Production 2018), a dance documentary about Tero Saarinen by filmmaker Thomas Freundlich, has been included in 11 Official Festival Selections around the world since its premiere in 2018. Last week it was presented at Arlington International Film Festival in the US. Today, 18 November, the film is a part of Stingray Festival 4K Channel's special programming. Available in 12 countries, the channel delivers only high quality 4K picture with Dolby Digital audio and has a vast art programme from opera to contemporary dance and ballet. Finnish audiences can watch the film at Yle Areena.

TSC's Nordic co-production Transit premiered in the beginning of October, and has since received fantastic feedback from critics and audiences alike. The performances at Malmö Opera have been welcomed with standing ovations nearly every night! Transit will become part of TSC’s own touring repertoire in 2021.  You can experience Skåne Dansteater’s version at Malmö Opera - or from your own home, as the last shows are livestreamed 23 October to 1 November! Tero Saarinen Company will perform with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra again next week. Rebond, a choreography by Tero Saarinen, is part of The Lover, a concert series led by chief conductor Susanna Mälkki. TSC dancer Oskari Kymäläinen and HPO's percussion section leader Xavi Castelló Aràndiga perform the duet of two art forms, set to the hypnotic Rebonds B by composer Iannis Xenakis. The choreography is based on the polyphonic nature of the musical piece: "The composition is rhythmically very interesting and requires a virtuoso player. To me, it sounds like at times there were more musicians than one playing. In my choreography, I wanted to capture the same sort of intensity and diversity with the movement, and, simultaneously, build a bridge between these two forces - music and dance." - Saarinen explains.

Tero Saarinen's latest large-scale creation Transit will premiere on 3 October in Sweden. Strict Covid-19 regulations apply to the premiere season at Malmö Opera. The orchestra will play live, but in a separate space and the audience will hear them via the PA. There are only 50 tickets available per night at the 1500-seat venue. Transit is a Nordic co-production. The creation will be available in TSC’s own touring repertoire from 2021. Performed by the entire ensemble of Skånes Dansteater at the premiere, the choreography is set to contemporary composer Sebastian Fagerlund's trilogy Stonework (2015), Drifts (2016–17) and Water Atlas (2018). The music is combined with spatial sound design by Tuomas Norvio. The set design centres on an animated film installation by visual artist duo IC-98, in constant dialog with the lighting design is by Minna Tiikkainen and costumes by Teemu Muurimäki. David Scarantino is the Choreographer's Assistant. Conductor for Malmö Opera Orchestra is David Björkman. 

The first book about Tero Saarinen will be out this week, published by Siltala in Finland. The first edition is in Finnish but negotiations for international versions are underway. Esteemed dance journalist Hannele Jyrkkä followed Saarinen for a whole year, accompanying the choreographer throughout the creative process of Third Practice. Observations and discussions took place in rehearsal studios, backstages and Saarinen's kitchen. The reader is taken on a trip that sheds light on Saarinen from many different perspectives, from his childhood all the way to his overall philosophy, through which all of us could perhaps learn to live a little bit more boldly. The book (in Finnish only) is now available from the Siltala webshop. It will be in bookshops all over Finland and as an e-book later in the fall. 

Tampereen Työväen Teatteri's rock musical rendition of Hamlet received several rave reviews following its premiere last week. TSC's role in director Otso Kautto's eclectic team of artists was to work with the actors' movement identity, based on the butoh-inspired TERO technique. According to critics, Tero Saarinen and Satu Halttunen's work "helped breathe life into the characters" and "Makes it especially thrilling to watch how Hamlet - eternally struggling with words - uses movement as a way of expressing the deepest corners of his mind".

Tero Saarinen Company's iconic production Borrowed Light was invited to the Jacob's Pillow Virtual Festival in August. Inspired by the legacy of the Shakers, the production is a collaboration with early music ensemble The Boston Camerata. Praised by audiences and critics alike, the production was originally presented at the esteemed festival twice - first in 2006 and second time in summer 2012. This year's Virtual Festival featured a video from the 2012 engagement as well as a recently recorded artists talk. Despite a 3 day limit and mandatory sign-up, the digital content reached a total of over 3000 views with audiences from several continents.

Tero Saarinen Company continues its fruitful collaboration with the Helsinki Philharmonic and chief conductor Susanna Mälkki. The fall season's program includes two sets of concerts with a duet by a TSC dancer and HPO musician. Together, performed from September 8 to 11, features Voice (music Tore Takemitsu), a dialogue between flutist Jenny Villanen and TSC's Natasha Lommi (choreography and dance). The Lover, scheduled from 27 to 29 October, includes Rebond, a choreography by Tero Saarinen. Set to Rebonds B by Iannis Xenakis, the duet is performed by TSC dancer Oskari Kymäläinen and HPO's percussion section leader Xavi Castelló Aràndiga.

Tampereen Työväen Teatteri's new rock musical rendition of Hamlet will premiere on 3 September. As part of director Otso Kautto's artistic team, filled with a number of big Finnish names, Tero Saarinen and Satu Halttunen have helped the actors find a new identity via their physical existence. "The aim has not been to do choreography as such, but more to help the actors channel their character via physical form. Their movement will manifest a mindset that stems from all the contradiction and violence that Hamlet sows around him.", describes Saarinen.

The class is livestreamed from the brand-new TSC Studio to TSC’s Facebook-page and www.helsinkikanava.fi from 11:00 am to 11:45 am. Anyone can participate – you don’t need a dance background! Tero Saarinen Company's turnover in 2019 was 1,4 million euros. It had activities in 9 countries on 2 continents. Saarinen's creations had 17 300 live spectators. Audience outreach and training events reached 2000 participants. TSC's permanent staff of 10 was complemented with 70 freelancers and service providers. In addition to artistic work, the year's highlights included the renovation and move to TSC Studio and new offices at the Cable Factory. The Annual Report is only available in Finnish.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, performances of Third Practice, a collaboration of Tero Saarinen Company and Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet’s Almi Hall are being rescheduled to 2–6 March, 2021. The work starring twelve dancers and the tenor Topi Lehtipuu, plus virtual soprano Núria Rial, was inteded to have its Helsinki premiere season on 10–17 June, 2020.

Tero Saarinen's riveting take on Sibelius and The Kalevala is now online at Stage24.fi. It is also available for Arte subscribers, Yle Areena viewers in Finland, and, part of the official selection of Finnish culture, available via the European Union delegation in the USA #HomeWithEU campaign. The creation is based on an early masterpiece by iconic Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and a timeless story featured in the Finnish national epic, The Kalevala. In his contemporary take on the tale of a young man who seduces his sister, kills his enemies, and falls on his own sword, director-choreographer Tero Saarinen fuses dance with opera and live music. Commissioned by the Finnish National Opera, Kullervo features nearly 100 performers on stage. The FNO and Tero Saarinen Company co-production originally premiered in 2015.

Tero Saarinen Company’s new premises at the cultural hub of the Cable Factory in Helsinki, Finland are designed to serve dance comprehensively. Each detail of the Company’s own rehearsal space TSC Studio has been chosen to provide the best possible working conditions for dance and dance artists. On top of TSC’s own rehearsals and training activities, the Studio is opened up for artistic residencies and it is rented out for eg. rehearsal use and workshops.

Developed in the first ever residency at Tero Saarinen Company, dance artist Jenna Broas, spatial designer and artist Fabian Nyberg and composer-musician Martin Granö's creation fusing animated video with dance, Truths That Never Were, will be streamed live from TSC Studio on Friday 20 March at 19:00 (GMT +2) due to the coronavirus pandemic. All shows have been postponed and we are looking at alternative dates.

Transit is produced as a Nordic co-production and will be premiered by Skånes Dansteater in Sweden. The creation will be available in TSC’s own touring repertoire from 2021.

Tero Saarinen Company's popular morning classes for professionals will continue in 2020. David Scarantino will teach TERO-technique in Taiwan on 12 - 21 January, as part of the Ehrstrand Dance Collective Winter Workshop at Seed Dance Company. Tero Saarinen Company has toured extensively after moving to its new space at the Cable Factory in June. This season’s 18 performances of choreographer Saarinen’s works reached 14 000 spectators in Bruges, Brussels, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Seoul, St. Petersburg, Stuttgart, and Yokohama. The three critically acclaimed creations presented this fall, Breath, Zimmermann Trio and Vortex, differ much in style and form but all feature live music in a pivotal role.

Tero Saarinen Company has begun collaboration with Shaksfin Asia. Hannes Nimpuno and Jack Lin will represent TSC in Asia and Oceania. Established in 2000, Shaksfin is one of the leading producers of performing arts in the territory and perhaps best known for their work with music. Current dance roster includes Sasha Waltz & Guests, Hofesh Shechter Company and now, Tero Saarinen Company.

Tero Saarinen’s Vortex, commissioned by the National Dance Company of Korea in 2014 will once again re-enter the renowned company’s repertoire. Vortex will first have a run in South Korea, this time at the LG Arts Centre on 3-5 October. The NDCK will then tour in Japan with the work: performances at KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theater will take place on 25-27 October.

Tero Saarinen Company will relocate to the Cable Factory: a 200m2 dance studio as well as TSC office and technical storage facilities are under renovation. The new TSC Studio will also be rented out as well as used for residencies and demo performances. The space will be equipped with a Harlequin spring floor, simple lighting pipes and sound system.

Tero Saarinen and accordionist extraordinaire Kimmo Pohjonen will tour in Stuttgart, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Hong Kong next season. The world-renowned artists’ duet intertwines live music, dance and visuals into wild forms and mythical images, infused by Beckett-inspired absurd humour. Tickets for the pair’s home season at the Alexander Theatre in Helsinki just went on sale. Early bird pricing -20% available until 2 June.

Tero Saarinen Company and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra will perform in Brussels and Bruges with Tero Saarinen's choreography Zimmermann Trio. The tour is part of the Cultural Programme for Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Third Practice draws from Monteverdi’s radical heritage. Twelve TSC dancers and HeBO musicians are joined on stage by tenor Topi Lehtipuu and the virtual avatar of Catalonian soprano Núria Rial. Work-in-progress open rehearsals in Helsinki at Finnish National Theatre in May. TSC’s winter intensive 2019 focuses on Tero Saarinen’s choreographic work. Set to take place on week 8 (winter break in Helsinki), the 5-day course gives a comprehensive overview of TERO Technique and the philosophy behind it. This year’s winter intensive’s special emphasis is in the technique’s transformation into choreography.

TSC Artistic Director Tero Saarinen and Managing Director Iiris Autio received high acknowledgements for their work on Finland's Independence Day. The President of the Republic of Finland awarded Saarinen with the Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland and Autio with Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland.

TSC's long-time Lighting Designer Mikki Kunttu has been shortlisted for Knight of Illumination USA, ETC Award for Dance, for Tero Saarinen Company's Zimmermann Trio.

Tero Saarinen Company's Managing Director Iiris Autio was awarded with Helsinki Golden Medal on Helsinki Day 12 June for her extensive work in advocating Finnish contemporary dance internationally.

Long-awaited open morning classes with Tero Saarinen's movement technique will start running at Alexander Theatre, Helsinki. Aimed for dance professionals and students in professional training, TERO Morning Classes focus on awakening the body and the senses. The classes will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings on 16 April–25 May.

Rooted with Wings by filmmaker Thomas Freundlich, follows Tero Saarinen over a period of five years from 2014 to 2018. It includes exclusive footage from backstage and performances around the world, and opens up the choreographer's artistic process through his own words. The film premiered at Avant Première in Berlin last month and will be shown in Finland at Loikka dance film festival in April.

Commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Tero Saarinen's choreography Zimmermann Trio receives its world premiere at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles on 19 January. At the same time, Tero Saarinen Company also performs in Paris: choreographed to music by Esa-Pekka Salonen, Morphed will be seen at the renowed Théâtre National de Chaillot on 18–20 January.

TSC dancer and teacher David Scarantino taught TERO Technique at Steps on Broadway in New York last week. So much enthusiasm in NYC, great to be back!

At the break of January and February, Tero Saarinen and Sini Länsivuori will hold an eight-day course at Scripps College in California. Directly after, TERO Technique Master Classes in New York will be taught in the guidance of David Scarantino.

After its world premiere season in Canada, Tero Saarinen and Kimmo Pohjonen's duet Breath will be seen in Tampere on 12 May, at Turku City Theatre on 22 May, and at Alexander Theatre in Helsinki on 29 May–1 June. Audiences in Helsinki also have the opportunity to see a work-in-progress open rehearsal on 22–24 March.

This season, Tero Saarinen Company will perform at many of the world's most prestigious venues in London, New York, Paris, Los Angeles and Montreal.

This spring, Morphed was seen in Croatia and Serbia. Next the creation opens St. Petersburg's Open Look International Dance Festival on 30 June. on 4 August, it will be performed at Civitanova Danza in Italy and on 10 August at Royal Festival Hall in London.

Choreographer-dancer Tero Saarinen and composer-accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen join forces in a new creation titled Breath. The creation will receive its world premiere on 12 April, 2018 at Grand Théâtre de Québec and at Place des Arts in Montréal, Canada programmed by Danse Danse.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic has commissioned a creation from Finnish choreographer Tero Saarinen. Saarinen's take on Bernd Zimmermann's Cello Concerto en forme de pas de trois (1966) will premiere at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall on January 19, 2018.
